Choose Stunning Shirley Baker Photography from Our Gallery
Shirley Baker photography is a perfect example of Northern Art. We proudly feature her art at our gallery. A lover of photography, this artist was born in Salford, near Manchester. Her street photography, along with her street portraits, truly defines her talent. Her photographs encompass the working class districts of Greater Manchester. Shirley Baker started her career as an industrial photographer for a fabric manufacturer. Additionally, she was a photographer and writer for different publications, including The Guardian. A few years later she started work as a lecturer at the Salford College of Art. It was during this time that she took candid photographs of people living in both the Salford and Manchester areas during a time of large slum clearance.
It is our pleasure to exhibit the art of this artist at our gallery. Shirley Baker photography portrays the life and spirit of the times. None of the subjects pose in her work. Known for her ‘street photographs’, she nevertheless also includes children, people with their pets, older women, and jazz clubs. Her work embodies the human character and behaviour. In it, one can see her compassion for social injustice. It is her photographs of inner-city working-class communities living in Salford and Manchester that define her distinct style. Furthermore, her photographs of life in the North of England are distinctly her own. Moreover, she has said that she loves the immediacy of unposed, spontaneous photographs. This is clearly evident in her beautiful artwork.
