Imagine the Artwork of Shirley Baker, Photographer in Your Home
Imagine the art of Shirley Baker, photographer gracing the walls of your home or office? Artwork is a beautiful addition to any decor, especially if it is art that speaks to you. Art is available in many different forms. Photography is one type of art. It has unique features that make it distinctly different to a painting, for example. The art of photography is an ideal medium for creative expression. This is clearly noticeable in the photographs of Shirley Baker. Photography is also spontaneous. Shirley Baker’s photographs cover a variety of humanist subjects. She immersed herself in the street culture of her time and ensured its documentation through her photographs.
Shirley Baker, photographer’s street photography epitomises her career. However, there are also other bodies of work that display quiet, poetic drama and everyday humour. Shirley Bake began life in the village of Salford. She received a gift of a camera as a young child. Thus, her passion began at the age of 8. She went on to study Pure Photography at Manchester College of Technology. In fact, she was one of few women in post-war Britain to receive formal photographic training. Throughout her career as a freelance photographer and lecturer, she was happiest when photographing British society in transition, following WWII.
Shirley Baker, photographer, never posed her photographs. She describes seeing a wall of graffiti, thinking that it was artistic, but wanted a human face within it. She then waited for a young boy to walk past and then took the photo. We’re happy to have Shirley Baker’s stunning and meaningful photographic art at our gallery.
