Up High Street

Clare Allan studied Fine Art at Humberside University, where she specialised in printmaking. She applies a method not unlike etching to her drawings, using a rag full of charcoal dust to ‘ink up’ the paper, and a rubber to create highlights.

Her work features Northern street scenes, hills behind rooftops, and smoke blown across rain washed skies. Many of the drawings show Clare’s native New Mills, a small gritstone town in the High Peak. Views of Manchester are also depicted with a nod to the artist Valette. Each drawing has a history, and a story to tell.

‘’Although I work from direct observation, I am not interested in making a literal representation of what I see. I try to get down the feeling of the place.’’
