“My recent work arises from a love of landscape based in particular on views of the Peak District as I walk along its edges and pathways. I’m inspired by the drama of landscape including rapidly changing weather, light and colour. I aim to capture this drama – particularly light on the horizon, wild skies, receding hills and textured foregrounds.
The process of painting is very important to me and I take pleasure in the surface and luminosity of paint itself. My paintings emerge over several weeks as I layer paint to create texture, movement, light effects and tone. I draw on memory and imagination as well as referring to the sketches I make as I walk the landscape. Back in my studio, I paint vigorously and energetically using cloths, knives and fingers as well as brushes. I work on several paintings simultaneously and I spend time studying each one before I decide that a work is finished.”
