Painter of figures and portraits in oils; Draughtsman. He studied at Manchester school of Art under Valette (where his contempories included Lowry and Fitton), and at St, Martin’s School of Art. He exhibited first in 1924 at Manchester Art Federation and subsequently showed in London, at the RBA, NEAC, RA, Manchester, Liverpool and abroad. His work is represented in major public collections including Manchester City Art Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and the Ben Uri Gallery.
Instructor in drawing and painting at Manchester University after Valette’s retirement, he was for a time art critic for the Manchester Evening News and the City News.
Influenced by cubism and surrealism, his powerfully observed works ranged from imaginative surrealistic scenes to psychologically penetrating portraits.
